There are a variety of methods used to prevent or plan pregnancy, based on identifying a woman’s fertile days. The main purpose of the natural way of contraception is to avoid fertilisation, which eventually will help in preventing pregnancy. Natural methods like periodic abstinence, coitus interruptus and lactational amenorrhea prevent pregnancy.
  • Periodic abstinence or rhythm method: In this method, the couples avoid coitus from day 10th-17th of the menstrual cycle. As in this period of time, the chances of ovulation are high. However, the length of the menstrual cycle does not remain consistent every month with every individual due to dietary disturbances, psychological factors, emotional states resulting in shifting date of ovulation. Incorrect forecasting of safe days for coitus invariably leads to conception, hence making the natural rhythm method not failproof.
  • Coitus interruptus/withdrawal: In this method of natural contraception, the male partner withdraws the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation hence insemination is prevented.
  • Lactational Amenorrhoea: This method of natural contraception refers to the stoppage of menstruation during the period of lactation. Breastfeeding causes an increase in the level of prolactin in the blood, which suppresses gonadotrophins thereby prohibiting ovulation. As ovulation does not occur during this period, so conception will not occur. Amenorrhea related to lactation lasts generally for a period of up to six months post parturition.
  • Cervical caps: This is an artificially made barrier marketed as a contraceptive. The main purpose of the use of this barrier is to restrict the sperm and ovum from coming closer. The cervical cap is a soft rubber cap that is inserted into the female reproductive tract that covers the entrance of the uterus and hence prevents sperms from reaching the oocyte.
