Which among the following is not included in Whittaker’s Five Kingdom Classification?
The correct option is
B
Viruses
Robert H. Whittaker in 1969, proposed a five-kingdom system of classification of organisms. The following three criteria were used for classification:
1) Complexity of cell structure
2) Complexity of the organism's body
3) Mode of nutrition.
Five kingdoms of Whittaker's classification include Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia.
Viruses are considered to be entities with both living and nonliving characteristics. They are acellular with just a protein coat called the capsid and genetic material which could be either DNA or RNA. The virus characteristics were such that these did not fit any of Whittaker’s criteria and hence were not included in his system of classification.
