Diffusion pressure deficit (DPD) is the reduction in diffusion pressure (DP) of water in a system over its pure state due to presence of solutes. Diffusion pressure (DP) is the pressure exerted by the molecules that are undergoing diffusion. DP of pure solvent is maximum. DPD determines the direction of movement of water. Water always moves from an area of lower DPD to the area or cell of higher DPD.

The pressure that is required to prevent water from diffusing or undergoing osmosis in spite of a difference in water potentials, is called osmotic pressure (OP).

Turgor Pressure (TP) is the pressure exerted by the swollen protoplast on its walls due to the osmotic entry of water into it.

Wall pressure (WP) is the pressure exerted by the cell wall on the protoplasm in a fully turgid cell. It is generally equal and opposite to turgor pressure except in a plasmolysed cell.
