Birsa Munda led the Munda Movement in the Santhal pargana of present day Jharkhand. Birsa was arrested on 8 August 1895 from Chalkat. He was released in the year 1897 due to a famine. From 1897-1900, resistance between the British and the Munda rebels continued, killing hundreds of tribals. Around 400 Munda rebels attacked the Khunti police station. In 1898, the rebels pushed back the British army in the Tanaga river region.
