The Santhals had been protesting against the British domination right from the beginning of their rule. In the year 1855-56, there was a huge revolt called the Santhal Revolt. The protest was a violent one. The Santhals lost the battle. With the death of 15,000 Santhals, the resistance was brutally crushed. The British, in order to pacify the Santhals, later created a separate Santhal Pargana.
