Periyar was initially a member of the Indian National Congress. Later, he perceived that it only catered to the Brahmins, upper castes and so, left Congress in 1925. He opposed ideas of racial supremacy and advocated for equality. He criticised caste- and gender-based discrimination. He became the president of the Justice Party in 1939.
