When glucose is broken down without using oxygen it is known as anaerobic respiration. Less energy is produced in anaerobic respiration. For e.g., yeasts breakdown glucose anaerobically into alcohol and carbon dioxide and releases energy. In muscle cells glucose is metabolised to lactic acid without using oxygen.
