The National Policy on Education-1986 was a comprehensive frame work to guide the development of education in the country. Under this policy, emphasis was given to provide free and compulsory education under Article 45 of Indian constitution, education of teachers and in-service training, language development, and a uniform education structure. It special emphasis on the removal of disparities and to provide equal opportunities in education. It aimed in to promoting economic and social development at the grassroots level in rural India. It also suggested spending around 6% of Indian GDP in education.
