The Sultan mainly collected five categories of taxes besides certain others. They were Ushr, Kharaj, Khams, Jizya, and Zakat. Ushr and Kharaj were land taxes collected from Muslims and non-Muslims, respectively. Khams was a fraction of the proceeds of war. Jizya was a religious tax on non-Muslims. It had to be paid to be allowed to live in the Sultanate. Zakat was a religious tax imposed on wealthy Muslims.
