Carbon monoxide

When carbon undergoes complete combustion, in the presence of oxygen, carbon dioxide $(C O_{2})$ is produced. However, if the relative amount of carbon increases or that of oxygen decreases, the reaction takes place as given below:

$2 C (s) + O_{2} (g) \to 2 C O (g)$

This is called incomplete combustion of carbon. The gas formed during this is carbon monoxide $(C O)$ , a poisonous gas.
