After the reign of Kulottunga I, the Chola Empire began to crumble slowly. By 1178 CE, due to inefficient kings, the power of Cholas declined rapidly, and their place was taken by the Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra and the Pandyas of Madurai. Ultimately, the Chola kingdom vanished altogether when Malik Kafur, a general in Alauddin Khilji’s army invaded South India in 1310.
