Question

Which characteristic of particles of matter is illustrated when sugar is dissolved in water without increase in the volume of water?

Solution

  1. One of the many characteristics of matter is the intermolecular space between two molecules of matter.
  2. In the case of solid, the intermolecular space is least which makes them tightly packed.
  3. moving in the intermolecular space in the case of liquid is lower than solids.
  4. When sugar is dissolved in water without an increase in the volume of water its crystals separate into fine particles.
  5. These particles of sugar go into inter-particle spaces between various particles of water, as a result of which there is no change in the volume of water when sugar is dissolved in it.
  6. Thus, the sugar molecules can also enter and get stored in that space.

Intermolecular space is the characteristic that cannot get in the gaps of the water molecule. Due to this even after adding sugar the volume of the water doesn’t change.
