Australopithecus:

  1. The fossils of Australopithecus Africanus (the first African ape-man) were discovered in late Pliocene and early Pleistocene rocks about 13 million years ago.
  2. Its fossils were discovered in Africa. The fossils were of a 5-6 years old baby and were discovered near Tuang in Africa. So it is called Tuang baby.
  3. It is supposed to be the connecting link between apes and man. It had many ape-like characters like :
    1. Small cranial cavity (600 cm³)
    2. Long canines and incisors
    3. Small stature (4 feet)
    4. Well-developed face
    5. Well-developed supra-orbital ridges
    6. Absence of chin
    7. Body hair was similar to that of the modern apes
    8. A strongly sloping face
    9. A pronounced jaw
