Ozone layer:

  • Ozone gas forms this layer in the stratosphere at the height of 20-50km from the earth’s surface.
  • The layer protects the living organisms from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Ozone depletion:

  • The chemicals that can deplete or reduce the ozone layer by reacting with the ozone are called ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
  • These are usually present in fire extinguishers, aerosol sprays, refrigerators.
  • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbon) compounds are other examples of ODS.
