Question

Which Condition Makes Flowers Invariably Autogamous?

Open in App
Solution

Cleistogamous flowers:

  1. Cleistogamous flowers are invariably autogamous as anther and stigma are in close proximity and are not exposed for cross-pollination.
  2. Autogamy is possible only when anther and stigma are close together and there is synchrony in pollen release and stigma receptivity.
  3. As in cleistogamous flowers, the flowers remain closed so that anthers and stigmas are never exposed.
  4. The flowers undergo only self-pollination.
  5. No external pollinating agency is required.
