Solution

  • Ozone is an allotropic form of oxygen found in the upper layer of the atmosphere about 20 Km away from the surface of the earth.
  • It protects the earth’s surface from harmful UV radiation.
  • Decrease in the quantity of ozone in the upper layer of the atmosphere is called depletion of the ozone layer or Ozone hole.
  • Depletion of the ozone layer is being caused by certain compounds such as chlorofluorocarbon compounds or CFCs, oxides of nitrogen, etc.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) rays will enter into our atmosphere through the hole in the ozone layer.
  • On exposing our skin to this UV radiation will cause Skin cancer.
  • Other health issues are weakening of eye-sight, and weakening of the immune system.
