Question

What does a transamination mainly involve?

Open in App
Solution

Solution:- Transamination is the process by which amino groups are removed from amino acids and transferred to acceptor keto-acids to generate the amino acid version of the keto-acid and the keto-acid version of the original amino acid.

  1. It involves the transfer of amino groups from one amino acid to keto groups of a keto acid.
  2. Transamination in biochemistry is accomplished by enzymes called transaminases or aminotransferases.
  3. α-ketoglutarate acts as the predominant amino-group acceptor and produces glutamate as the new amino acid.
  4. A specific example is the transamination of alanine to make pyruvic acid and glutamic acid.
