Solution

Biological nitrogen Fixation :

  1. In 1901, Beijerinck discovered the process of Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and specified that the process is carried out by special groups of prokaryotes.
  2. These entities make use of the enzyme to catalyze the conversion of nitrogen present in the atmosphere into a form of nitrogen – ammonia (NH3).
  3. Nitrogen Fixation is a biological process in which the nitrogen gas is converted into a usable form for plants and other microbes.
  4. Free-living nitrogen fixing aerobic microbes are Azotobacter and Beijernickia.

Enzyme involved: Nitrogenase is involved in biological nitrogen fixation.
