Question

Which factor imparts crystalline nature to a polymer like nylon?

Open in App
Solution

  • Nylon are polyamide polymers.
  • It consists of many monomeric units joined by amide linkage.
  • One molecule of nylon or one polymer chain gets attracted to another by intermolecular Hbonding, which is present between the two terminal groups, C=O and NH in nylon.
  • Also, the backbone structure of nylon is regular and symmetrical. Strong intermolecular forces like hydrogen bonding lead to close packing of chains that impart crystalline character
  • These factors together lead to close and symmetrical packing of molecules which imparts the crystalline nature to nylon.
