Question

Which force governs the motion of planets around the sun?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

There are two forces that keep the planets in their orbits.

1)Gravity
Gravity is the primary force that controls the orbit of the planets around the sun. While each planet has its own gravity based on the size of the planet and the speed at which it travels, orbit is based on the gravity of the sun. The sun's gravity is just strong enough to keep the planets pulled toward it to create an orbit pattern but not strong enough to pull the planets into the sun.

2)Inertia

The physical law that states that objects in motion have a tendency to remain in motion also plays a role in keeping the planets in orbit.
