Question

Which gas is important for Plant Growth?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis: it is the most important process for plants to grow, which primarily is driven by carbon dioxide(CO2). Without carbon dioxide(CO2), plants cannot manufacture their food.

During photosynthesis, plants intake carbon dioxide(CO2) from the air and water(H2O) from the soil.

The water is oxidized by losing electrons within the plant cell while the carbon dioxide is reduced by gaining electrons within the plant cell. Water is transformed into oxygen and carbon dioxide transforms into glucose. Oxygen produced is released into the air, and Energy produced is stored within the glucose molecules.

Apart from carbon dioxide(CO2), Nitrogen gas is abundantly available in the atmosphere. However, it can not be used by the plant directly, hence the process of Nitrogen fixation takes place by some bacteria.

In some amount, Oxygen is also necessary for the growth of plants as they are living entities after all.
