Question

Which gas is used in the Bosch process?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The Bosch process is generally used for industrial purposes.
  2. The process is suitable for the large-scale production of Hydrogen by only the use of water and coke.
  3. The produced Hydrogen is used in many chemical reactions chemical reactions
  4. The steps involved in the Bosch reaction are as follows:

Mechanism

Formation of water gas

  • Carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas are produced when steam is passed over red hot carbon.
  • Carbon monoxide with Hydrogen is called water gas or syngas.
  • The temperature is maintained at 1200°C
  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
    C(s)+H2OlCO(g)+H2(g)CarbonCabonHydrogenmonoxide

Production of Hydrogen gas by separating carbon monoxide from water gas.

  • In this step, the excess amount of steam is given to water gas at 450°Ctemperature.
  • This produces Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen gas.
  • The catalyst used in the reaction is Iron oxide and Chromium oxide.
  • The chemical reaction occurs as follows:
    H2g+CO(g)+H2Ol450°CFe2O3/Cr2O3CO2g+2H2gHydrogenCarbonCarbonHydrogenmonoxidedioxide

Hence water gas is used in the Bosch process.
