Question

which gas will be involved if sodium bicarbonate is added to solution of tartaric acid?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Carbon dioxide (CO2) will be involved if sodium bicarbonate is added to solution of tartaric acid. When sodium bicarbonate is added to tartaric acid it will give water-soluble sodium tartrate along with carbonic acid. Carbonic acid (H2CO3) will spontaneously decompose into water and carbon dioxide. Collect the all the gas evolved, pour it on a lit candle flame. The flame will readily go out, which prove that it's CO2.
