Which gases are responsible for acid rain

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student, The gases responsible for acid rain are SO2 (Sulphur dioxide) and NO2 (Nitrogen dioxide. These gases are released into the atmosphere via Human activities. for instance, Industrial process, Combustion of polymers, etc. The formation of acid rain as follows: SO2 + H2O → H2SO3 (sulphurous acid) SO3 + H2O → H2SO4 (sulphuric acid) 4(NO2) + 2(H2O) + O2 → 4(HNO3) (Nitric acid) Apart from these, other oxides of nitrogen which may oxidize to NO2 also contribute to acid rain.
