In vertebrates, the kidneys are two organs that resemble reddish-brown beans.
These two bean-shaped organs vary from the size of a hand.
Just above the kidneys, are the glands, called adrenal glands, each kidney possesses one adrenal gland.
The right adrenal gland is pyramidal in structure, whereas the left adrenal gland has a semilunar shape.
Greater in size than the right is the left adrenal gland.
The glands typically measure 5 by 3 cm and weigh 7 to 10 grams when combined.
The immune system, blood pressure, response to stress, and other vital processes are all controlled by hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands.
