Serfoji II ascended the throne of Thanjavur with the help of British Governor-General Lord Cornwallis after his dispute with his uncle Amar Singh. In lieu of this aid, he accepted the overlordship of the British East India company. He also accepted the provisions of the Treaty of 1792.
During the reign of Governor-General Lord Wellesley, on the recommendation of the committee which was made for the establishment of the welfare state in Thanjavur, the treaty of 1799 was framed between Serfoji II and the British East India Company.
As per this treaty, Serfoji II sovereignty was restricted to the fort of Thanjavur and its surrounding areas. He became a permanent pensioner and prisoner in the hands of the Britishers
