Question

Which has more latent heat - ice or water?

Open in App
Solution

  • The heat needed to transform a solid into a liquid or vapour phase, or a liquid into a vapour phase, is known as latent heat.
  • Latent heat is the amount of heat energy consumed or emitted during a phase change.
  • To change the phase of water from ice to liquid water at Zero degree Celsius, 334 Joules of energy is required which is the latent heat of ice.
  • The water thus formed will have 334 Joules more energy compared to ice.
  • Thus liquid water has more latent heat than the ice at the same temperature.
