Goitre or goiter is swelling in the neck or it is characterised by an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland due to the deficiency of thyroxine hormone in the body. The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones - called thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), these hormones are carried round the body through the blood. There are different types of goitre, each with various causes. Thyroxin function is is to stimulate the consumption of oxygen and thus the metabolism of all cells and tissues in the body.
