Question

Which hormone increases urine output?

Open in App
Solution

Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH):

  1. It is also called vasopressin.
  2. The hypothalamus produces ADH, which is transmitted axonally to the neurohypophysis ( posterior pituitary gland).
  3. ADH acts primarily on the kidney, stimulating water and electrolyte resorption by the distal tubules and reducing water loss through urine (diuresis).
  4. A defect in the production or release of ADH impairs the kidney's ability to conserve water, resulting in water loss and dehydration.
  5. A defect in the production or release of ADH increases urine output.
