Oxytocin is a hormone produced by the posterior pituitary. It is produced in response to stretching of the cervix before and during labour and stimulation of breastfeeding. It stimulates ejection of milk from the alveoli into the ducts. When the baby suckles, the hormone prolactin, secreted by the anterior pituitary, stimulates milk production.
