Question

Which hormone reverses apical dominance effects?

Open in App
Solution

Apical dominance:

  1. Apical dominance is a phenomenon of a plant in which because of the central stem the growth of the lateral buds is inhibited.
  2. This apical dominance occurs because of the hormone auxin, which is produced at the tip of the shoot.
  3. As a result of dominance, the plant becomes long and thin.
  4. The apical dominance phenomenon is reversed by the hormones called cytokinins.
  5. The cytokinin hormone helps in plant growth and stimulates cell division in the root and shoot systems.
  6. Cytokinin can be transported acropetally in the xylem sap, then enter auxiliary buds and promote their outgrowth.
  7. Cytokinin can trigger the outgrowth of the buds even in the presence of auxin.
