Antagonistic effects:

  1. The effect produced by the contrasting actions of two or more chemical groups is known as the antagonistic effect.
  2. For example - the effect between insulin and glucagon on blood sugar levels which have two opposite actions.
  3. Insulin lowers the blood sugar level whereas glucagon increases the blood sugar level.

Hormones having antagonistic effects:

  1. Insulin and glucagon are hormones that have antagonistic effects.
  2. Both these hormones are created by the beta and the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas.
  3. Both these hormones have an antagonistic nature towards each other.
  4. Insulin is responsible for the decrease in the glucose level in the blood, whereas glucagon increases the sugar levels in the blood.
  5. Glucagon and insulin are known to be the feedback system that maintains stability in the glucose level of the blood.
