Question

Which image is formed by a concave mirror, plane mirror, and convex mirror?

Solution

Plane mirror:

  1. A mirror is any smooth, highly polished reflecting surface.
  2. A plane mirror is a mirror with a highly polished plane surface.
  3. The virtual and erect image of the same size as the object is formed using a plane mirror.

An illustrative diagram of a plane mirror is shown below.

Convex mirror:

  1. Always forms a virtual and erect image, but the image size is always smaller than the object size.
  2. Convex mirrors are curved mirrors with a reflective surface that bulges out towards the light source.
  3. This protruding surface reflects light in all directions and is not used to focus light.

An illustrative ray diagram of a convex mirror is shown below.

Concave mirror:

  1. When the object is anywhere from infinity to the focus, the image formed is always real and inverted except when the image is between the Focus and pole of the mirror.

An illustrative diagram to show the virtual image formed by the concave mirror is given below.

2. The reflective surface of a concave mirror is curved inward and away from the light source.

3. Concave mirrors focus light inward to a single focal point.

4. Thus, the concave mirror forms both real and virtual images.

An illustrative diagram of a concave mirror is shown below.
