Electric circuit

An electric circuit consists of a network of electric components connected in a closed loop. This loop is made using electrical wires and is powered by a source, like a battery, that enables the flow of current through the circuit.

These electrical components may be connected in series or parallel. Components in series connections receive the same amount of current but potential difference varies.

In parallel connection potential difference across each component remains constant but current varies through each branch of connection.

  1. A voltmeter is a device used in the circuit to measure the potential difference across a resistance. A voltmeter is made up of a material that has high electrical resistance, hence allowing low current through it and measuring the accurate value of potential difference across the resistance.
  2. An ammeter is a device connected to a circuit to measure the current flowing through the circuit. It is designed with a material of low electrical resistance. Ammeter is placed in series to get the full current flowing through a branch of the circuit.
