Question
Which is more covalent
LiF
or
LiCl
?

Solution
Lithium is a chemical element and is present in the first group of the periodic table.
The atomic number of Lithium is
3
and so it loses one of its electrons to become stable.
Lithium form
Li
+
and is called Lithium cation.
Lithium-ion is smaller in nature and so it easily distorts the anionic cloud.
Therefore, Lithium halides are partially covalent in nature.
If the size of the anions is larger then it will easily be distorted.
The order of increasing anionic size of halides is as follows:
F
-
<
Cl
-
<
Br
-
<
I
-
Thus we concluded that
Lithium chloride is more covalent in nature compared with Lithium Fluoride.
