Question

Which is more ionic NaClorAlCl3?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Sodium and Aluminium both are chemical elements that is present in the periodic table.
  2. Sodium and Aluminium both can donate electrons to become positively charged ions called cations.
  3. The polarising power is directly proportional to the covalent characters, and also greater will be the cationic charge, more covalent is the element.
  4. Sodium can lose one electron to become stable and attain +1 charge on it.
  5. Aluminium can lose three of its electrons to become stable and attain+3 charge on it.
  6. Aluminium bears more positive charge on it, so it is more covalent compared with NaCl.
  7. In Sodium chloride Sodium donates one of its electron to Chlorine to become stable and thus they are bonded electrostatically.
  8. Therefore, Sodium chloride is more ionic compared with Aluminium chloride.
