Question

Which is not an electrophile?

Open in App
Solution

Electrophile:

  1. The element that takes away the electrons from other element is an electrophile.
  2. The element has an electron deficiency tendency.
  3. Examples: Carbocations (CH3+) and neutral molecules having functional groups like the carbonyl group (>C=O) or alkyl halides (R3C-X, where X is a halogen).

Non-electrophile element:

  1. The Sodium-ion (Na+) has a non-electrophile element because it forms a complete octet.
  2. Since the Sodium atom has an electronic configuration of Ne3s1, it becomes Sodium-ion after one electron is donated, and its electronic configuration becomes Ne, the same as the electronic configuration of noble gases, and it becomes stable and non-electrophile.
