Tropical rain forests occur over equatorial or Sub-equatorial regions with abundant warmth and rainfall (200-350 cms/year) almost throughout the year. The forests are very dense almost impenetrable with maximum diversity. Productivity is also maximum. Standing crop biomass is highest. These forests occur in Congo basin of Africa and Amazon basin in South America. In India, they are located in the Western Ghats, Assam and Andamans. Because of the dense vegetation, these forests consume a lot of carbon dioxide and release a lot of oxygen in the atmosphere. Hence, they are called as "Lungs of planet Earth".
