Solution
Classification of kingdom Fungi
The members of kingdom Fungi are classified into four classes based on the morphology of mycelium, mode of spore formation, and fruiting body.
These classes are Deuteromycetes, Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, and Basidiomycetes.
Classification based on morphology of mycelium
The classification is based on the morphology of mycelium.
In Phycomycetes, the hyphae of fungi are without septa i.e. aseptate mycelium.
Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Deuteromycetes have septate mycelium.
Classification based on spore formation
Fungi are classified based on the whether the mode of spore formation is sexual or asexual.
The spores formed by sexual reproduction in Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, and Basidiomycetes are zygospores, ascospores, and basidiospores, respectively.
There is an absence of sexual phase in Deuteromycetes. Class Phycomycetes also produce spores asexually called sporangiospores, whereas the class Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Deuteromycetes produce conidiospores.
Classification based on fruiting bodies
The fruiting bodies are the sporophytes in which spores are formed during reproduction.
The fruiting bodies of Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, and Basidiomycetes are called sporocarp, ascocarp, and basidiocarp respectively.
