Question

Which instrument is based on the induction principle?

Open in App
Solution

Induction or electromagnetic induction is a phenomenon in which a changing magnetic flux through a coil produces an emf within the coil. Some popular instruments that used the principle of induction are:

  1. Induction cookers: AC current passing through conducting coils creates a varying magnetic field. This causes current to be induced on the metallic bases of the utensil. The resistance in the metal causes it to heat up, which therefore, heats up the ingredients/food.
  2. Electric generators: Coils kept in a strong magnetic field are rotated at high speeds, thereby creating a varying magnetic flux through the coil. The changing magnetic flux induces an emf within the coils and hence produces a current. Thus, mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy.
  3. Transformers: Electrical energy is transferred from one coil to another by means of electromagnetic induction.
