Chromosomes:

  1. The thread-like structure formed by supercoiling of DNA located in the nucleus of an organism is a chromosome.
  2. Each chromosome is made of protein and contains genetic information in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
  3. The largest chromosome is the lampbrush chromosome.
  4. Lampbrush chromosomes are the largest chromosomes.
  5. They are present in the growing immature eggs (oocytes) of some vertebrates like fishes, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
  6. They are absent in mammals.
  7. These chromosomes are identified with fine lateral loops that arise from the chromomere during meiosis.
  8. These loops give a brushy appearance to it. Hence, it is named the Lampbrush chromosome.
  9. They are used during the synthesis of RNA and yolk material formation.
