The most effective application of monoclonal antibodies is in the treatment of diseases, in the form of a treatment drug. They bind to specific epitopes on an antigen and can thereby target the diseased or damaged cells and they are cheaper to develop than conventional drugs. E.g: They can be used in the treatment of cancer by means of a treatment procedure known as radioimmunotherapy. In this treatment process, a monoclonal antibody is attached to a small radioactive particle and this helps transports the radiation treatment directly to cancer cells. This will minimize the effect of radiation on healthy cells.
