The stratum corneum, also known as the cornified layer is the outermost layer of our body. It consists of several layers of dead cells. These cells are made up of keratin. This layer prevents the entry of microbes and protects the underlying layers.

Granular layer- Middle layer consisting of 2-3 sublayers of flattened cells.

Malpighian layer (germinative layer)- Innermost layer of the epidermis. Skin pigmentation is due to melanin contained in the cells of the malpighian layer.
