Transitional epithelium is a layer of cells that forms the mucosal lining of your ureters, a portion of your urethra, and your urinary bladder. These cells are called transitional because they can undergo a change in their shape and structure.
It is made up of three types of cell layers: basal, intermediate, and superficial.
The intermediate cell layer is highly proliferative and, therefore, provides for rapid cell regeneration in response to injury or infection of the organ or tube in which it resides.
Superficial cell layer lines the lumen and it is the only fully differentiated epithelial tissue.
The basal layer promotes the epithelial stem cells in order to provide constant renewal of the epithelium. The tonofilaments(presents in basal layer) play a role in the attachment of the basal layer to the basement membrane via desmosomes.[
