Which metal is preferred for preparation of hydrogen
(i) from water ?
(ii) from acid ?
(i). Zinc is preffered for the preparation of hydrogen from water over pure zinc because the impurity present in granulated zinc is copper, whose catalysing effect speeds up the rate of reaction.
(ii). When dilute sulphuric acid or dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with metals above hydrogen in the activity series, hydrogen is produced. But in the case of metals below hydrogen in the activity series like copper silver etc and this does not happen.
(iii). Four metals are usually preferred to prepare hydrogen from water, they are Magnesium,Aluminium,Zinc and Iron. in case of magnesium it has to be reacted with boiling water to give hydrogen and in case of aluminium, zinc, and iron they have to be reacted with steam to give hydrogen. The reaction of iron and steam is reversible.
