Question

Which metal oxides are acidic?

Open in App
Solution

Metals oxides are acidic: Transition metal oxides in their higher oxidation states are acidic. Mn and Cr form acidic oxides in their higher oxidation states.

  • Manganese heptoxide(Mn2O7) forms permanganic acid (HMnO4)
  • Chromium trioxide(CrO3) forms chromic acid(H2CrO4)
  • Manganese heptoxide and Chromium trioxide are acidic oxides.
  • The oxidation number ofMninMn2O7is+7 (highest oxidation number of Mn)
  • The oxidation number of CrinCrO3is+6 (highest oxidation number of Cr).
  • Hence, (Mn2O7) and (CrO3) metal oxides are acidic.
