Landfills are one of the most common methods of toxic waste disposal. landfill is an area that is separated from environment which is used to dump wastes. Main characteristics required by a sanitary landfill are:

• It should have partial or complete hydrogeological isolation.
  
• Formal engineering plan for waste disposal and recovery have to made before.
  
• Proper covering is required to reduce availability of pests to waste. Toxic wastes are buried deep to avoid contact with the environment.
  
• Incineration cannot burn heavy metals and radioactive wastes. Therefore, these are to be stored and buried under ground.
