Solution

The correct option is D

centrifugation

The explanation for the correct option- (D) Centrifugation

Centrifugation – the process of separation of finely suspended solids from a liquid by rotating the mixture at a very high speed in an instrument called a centrifuge is called centrifugation.

For example – the separation of cream from milk.

The explanation for the incorrect options-

(A) Decantation - the process of pouring off the liquid layer formed above the sediment layer without disturbing the bottom sediment layer. This method can also be used to separate two immiscible layers of liquids. so this process cannot be used for the above purpose.

(B) Filtration – The process by which the insoluble or suspended particles of a mixture are separated from the liquid by using a porous membrane called a filter is called filtration. so this process cannot be used for the above purpose.

For example – the separation of sand and clay particles from water by passing it through a filter paper.

(C) Distillation – the process by which a soluble liquid can be separated from a solution by first converting it into vapours by evaporation and then cooling and collecting the vapours by condensation in another container is called distillation. so this process cannot be used for the above purpose.

For example – distilled water can be obtained from tap water by the process of distillation.

Hence option (D) is correct. The centrifugation method is used for separating cream from milk
