Zirconium can be purified by Van Arkel method. In this method, it is reacted with iodine to form a volatile compound, which on further heating decomposes to iodine and pure metal.
(impure)Zr+ 2I₂ $\to$ ZrI₄ $\to$ Zr(pure)+2I₂
