Question

Which of following produce gas?
1.CuSo4 and Zn
2.HCl and Zn
3.CuSo4 and Fe
4.NaOH and Al

Solution

Option 2 and 4 will produce H2 (hydrogen) gas.

Let's see the reactions of each of the following:

1) CuSO4 + Zn = ZnSO4 + Cu ; displacment reaction and no gas is produced.
2) 2HCl + Zn = ZnCl2 + H2 gas; Metal-acid reaction whereby metals displaces hydrogen from acid forming salt and hydrogen gas.
3) CuSO4 + Fe = Cu + FeSO4 ; displacement reaction, no gas is produced
4) NaOH+ Al = Na3AlO3 + H2; redox reaction
